Don't Let a Fake Fix Cost You

Scams

Jul. 01, 2025

Tech support scams are increasingly common and convincing. Scammers pretend there is something wrong with your computer or account, then try to trick you into paying for fake repairs or handing over personal information.  How it works:

 Scammers may

  • Call claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, or your internet service provider.
  • Show pop-up messages warning your device is “infected”
  • Urge you to call a number or click a link for help

They will often request remote access, ask for payment, or demand personal information, but the problem isn’t real.

Warning Signs

  • Unsolicited calls or pop-ups about urgent tech issues.
  • Requests for remote access to your computer
  • Payment demand via gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency
  • Pressure to act fast or keep it secret

How to Protect Yourself

Close the Window or Hang Up- Legitimate companies don’t contact you out of the blue

Don’t Share Access or Information- Never give out passwords, personal information, or remote access

Use Official Support Channels- Contact companies directly through their verified websites

Report the Scam- Go to reportfraud.ftc.gov to file a report
